Understanding Lent

Lent is a sacred 40-day season in the Christian calendar dedicated to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in preparation for the celebration of Easter. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, this period commemorates the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert, where He endured temptation by Satan before beginning His public ministry (Matthew 4:1-11).

Why 40 Days?

  • 💧Noah's Flood - 40 days of rain (Genesis 7:12)
  • ⛰️Moses on Sinai - 40 days with God (Exodus 24:18)
  • 🚶Elijah's Journey - 40 days to Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:8)
  • 🏜️Jesus in the Wilderness - 40 days of fasting (Matthew 4:1-2)

Three Pillars of Lent

1. Prayer

Deepen your communication with God (Matthew 6:6)

2. Fasting

Focus on God through self-denial (Matthew 6:17-18)

3. Almsgiving

Serve others with Christ's love (Matthew 6:3-4)
